LEAP 1
Just like lots of other things, there are lots of pros and cons to propaganda. It isn’t always bad, and sometimes it is there to help people. Propaganda can be used to help people in lots of ways. It can be used to tell parents to make sure that their kids need to wear their seat belts because if they don’t wear their seat belts they can get very badly injured and/or die in an accident. That may not be the whole truth, because sometime even in an accident, it doesn’t mean that you will die. But people say that to make the message stronger and more persuasive. But if somebody in a car and doesn’t have their seatbelt on it is very dangerous, this type of propaganda is good. Another example would be shots and vaccines. Om hospitals and in doctors’ offices you see advertisements that say get this vaccine, or get this shot. The doctors and hospitals say that if you or your child don’t get a vaccine or shot for this virus or flu, then they will get the virus and they will be in a lot of pain, and may die. That isn’t the whole truth because sometimes even without the vaccination you don’t get the virus. And sometimes there are side effects to the vaccine. Even if you do get the virus it doesn’t mean that you will die. But the doctors are trying to get you to get the vaccine so that the possibility of getting it isn’t as high, and you can stay healthy. All propaganda isn’t bad, and sometime it can be the thing that saves your life.
Propaganda is something to make you believe something, and sometimes that something isn’t something good. When someone makes you believe something it isn’t always good, because it prevents you from thinking individually and prevents people from saying what they think. And that is the case with some kinds of propaganda. For example when you see a propaganda ad that says that this country is bad and that everyone that is from that country is evil. This example shows that one country is bad, this isn’t good because sometimes when people aren’t getting the whole story and are told to believe something. This might lead to people doing things, taking action which may lead to something bad. This type of propaganda is used lots of times during wars, because the government wants the people in their country to think that all the people in the opposite country are bad and evil. The government does this because when they do something bad to the other country they don’t want the people of their country to think that they are the enemy and that they are just doing this for defense. Another way that propaganda can be bad is the technique that some propagandists use. For example fear is a technique of propaganda that doesn’t really have a positive effect, on our society. When people feel fear they don’t question the message, and that is why many propagandist use this technique. I think that fear has had a bad affect on our society because when you don’t get the whole message, you don’t fully understand what you are believing, or sometimes buying. One example of this is the Proactive Commercial. When you see this commercial they say that having acne and blemishes on your face is bad, and that your life inst good if you have acne, they also say that you are ugly if you have acne. But when see this commercial you don’t get the whole message, and the audience only see’s that message. Propaganda can have a very bad affect on our society, if used in a negative way.
I think that I have learned lots of things from this project. I have learned how to be able to find the whole message behind a piece of propaganda, and not just the message that the propagandist wants me to see. I think that now I can see propaganda clearly, and I can point out propaganda in my everyday life. I have learned that our society is significantly affected by propaganda, and propaganda has shaped our society to what it is now. Propaganda has affected our world in lots of different ways, it has made our world in to a society where it is harder for people to start thinking individually. Even though propaganda can be bad sometimes but it can also be good. I think propaganda prevents people from thinking individually.
Propaganda is everywhere, and our life and society have been affected by propaganda significantly. Propaganda can control what people believe, what people buy and how people live their lives. People rely on propaganda for what they buy. Usually when people are thinking about buying something propaganda plays a very big role in their decision. When people hear that a certain product can do something, and another product from a different company can’t they immediately think that that product is the best. The customer/ audience doesn’t wait to hear the other company and they also don’t want to hear what that certain product can’t do compared to what the other product from the other company can. If this world and our society didn’t have propaganda in it, we all would be able to believe in different things easier and our decisions would be 100% our decisions because there wouldn’t be anything or anyone telling us what is better. I think without propaganda our society is something is needed for our society because without it companies wouldn’t be able to sell their products, and messages wouldn’t be as powerful as they are with propaganda (good or bad). Our world and our society would be very different without propaganda. Propaganda is a piece of our society, that can be used for good.
Reflecting on my life and the current situations going on in certain realms of the world, their is propaganda everywhere. The new objective of todays age is to get your point across in the most effective way possible. In social media, athletics, politics and international affairs there are all some forms of informative advertisement going on today. Below are examples of propaganda I have seen in my everyday life:
1. Propaganda in Activism and Advocacy: KONY
Immediately thinking of this assignment, I thought of when I was informed of KONY 2012 in high school and of the harsh living of those in Uganda. I am aware of who Kony is but to sit through the video and analyze the effect on the world is another type of feeling and thinking for me. The film and operation to paint every city with Kony propaganda really attacked Kony and his army. It got in tune with peoples emotions and really portrayed a message that was eye opening. KONY 2012 was a clear message and simplified what it was that we as people needed to do to assist those in need.
2. Propaganda in News: Trump in Media
Throughout this whole year and even prior during the election process, we have seen Donald Trump in the media DAILY. Prior to the election, some of the ways he was portrayed in the media was able to shift in people's opinion on the decision to elect Donald Trump as president. People of status such as celebrities, politicians and athletes had voiced how disappointed they were on the decisions and ideas of Trump. Some had decided to withdraw from their backing of his campaign and presidency. Athletes who have just won the Superbowl refused to visit the white house as they were not in full support of our new president. Also, multiple musicians had turned down their invitation to perform at the White House presidency dinner. All of these things had been reported on social media. Social media allows the readers to develop their own opinion of the topic at hand. Depending on how the author portrays the message and headline can effect the opinion of the reader. Donald Trump's self portrayal of himself on his personal social media is another reason he got himself into trouble.
3. Propaganda in Politics and Government: Immigration and the U.S.
Recently because of the new laws and restrictions on Muslim and other immigrants, there have been bans on them traveling to our country. In retaliation to these efforts people have taken to social media to portray their protests, beliefs, and thoughts. Not only do you see what is going on you also see how people feel about Donald Trump and his presidency thus far. All over you see posters, news stories, and opinions of others that are all conveyed by the media.
4. Propaganda in Education: URI Youth Clinic
Newsletters, Tweets, Posts, flyers and many more methods of communication were painted across the University of Rhode Island last week in the anticipation of this years youth camp. The information consists of the benefits of the camp for our youth and the instruction that is taken place. The information also portrays that this camp is the best camp in the state, you'll learn a lot, and also get to perform on the field during the game. Because of this, this is a form of propaganda in which we try to sway the opinions of parents in sending their children to learn from the football, cheerleaders, and dancers of Rhode Island and shed light on our wonderful school as well.
5. Propaganda in Events: URI Newsletters
Each week, the univeristy sends out email blasts of newsletters explaining events happening around campus in the upcoming week. Whether it is athletics, greek life, clubs, or concerts, they are all portrayed on this one newsletter. There is also an active social media account (URIEvents) in which you can learn about things happening on campus. With these accounts they are able to spread awareness, run free giveaways, and send out a ton of information and incentives to people on campus for more involvement in the university.
6. Propaganda in My Personal Life: My Social Media
My favorite piece of propaganda today points back to my actual self. Last semester I took a class and learned a lot about how to brand myself to the world. I finally took the time out to realize how I market myself, how I want people to know me as, what I do, and my future goals. When looking at my social media I am very cautious of the things I post, something I have always been great about. Though I am a college student, my social media is not somewhere that you will find the details of my night life, sure I have fun, but I know how to market myself and would never want to be known as a "party girl" as some students are. In addition, I am mindful of who follows my accounts. Especially since my accounts are public I know that while finding a job my social could be looked at. Because I am building my own personal brand and developing an image I want to be known as, I am very proud of my social media presence.
